Eduardo Castillo is assistant professor at University
of Chile, Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism,
Department of Design. He is author of La Escuela de
Artes y Oficios EAO [The School of Arts and Trades
EAO] (2014) and Puño y Letra, movimiento social y
comunicación gráfica en Chile [Fist and Letterform:
Social Movement and Graphic Communication in
Chili] (2006). He is editor of Artesanos, Artistas,
Artífices. La Escuela de Artes Aplicadas de la Universidad
de Chile [Artisans, Artists, Artificers: The School
of Applied Arts of the University of Chile] (2010),
Waldo González, obra gráfica [Waldo González, Graphic
travail] (2010), and Norberto Oropesa, maestro alfarero
[Norberto Oropesa: Master Ceramic Artist] (2012), et
compiler of Cartel Chileno 1963–1973 [Chilean Posters
1963–1973] (2004).

Nathan Crilly is a senior lecturer in Engineering
Design at the University of Cambridge. His research
interests are in the areas of design, technology and
communication. He employs an interdisciplinary
approach to studying how artifacts are developed,
the properties they exhibit, and the ways in which
people respond to them.

Odette da Silva is a doctoral researcher in Design
Aesthetics at Delft University of Technology. Elle
combines conceptual and experimental approaches
to studying how people’s aesthetic appreciation of
products is affected by their knowledge of the design-
ers’ intentions or intended effects. Her research is part
of Project UMA (www.project-uma.com).

H. Alpay Er is Chairperson of the Industrial Design
Department at Özyeğin University (OzU) in Istanbul.
He studied industrial design at the Middle East
Technical University (METU), and completed his
PhD at the Manchester Metropolitan University in
the UK (1994). Previously, he worked at Hacettepe
University and Istanbul Technical University (ITU)
where he also served as the chairperson of Industrial
Design Department (2006–2013). His research interests
include design management and strategy, and design
politique, history and education in emerging countries.
His academic work has appeared in journals such
as Design Issues, the Journal of Design History and
Asian Design Journal, and was translated into several
languages. Alpay Er is a member of Design Research
Society (DRS), and was conferred with “Fellowship
of DRS” in 2006. He served in the International Council
of Societies of Industrial Design (lCSID) as a member of
executive board (2011–2013) and a regional advisor
(2013–2015). Professor Alpay Er is currently a member
of the board of directors of World Design Organization
(WDO/ICSID).

Kjetil Fallan is a professor of Design History at the
University of Oslo, Department of Philosophy, Classics,
History of Art and Ideas. He is the author of Design
Histoire: Understanding Theory and Method (Berger, 2010),
editor of Scandinavian Design: Alternative Histories (Berger,
2012), and co-editor with Grace Lees-Maffei of Made in
Italy: Rethinking a Century of Italian Design (Bloomsbury
Academic, 2013). Prof. Fallan is an editor of the Journal
of Design History and an advisory board member for
Design and Culture as well as for AIS/ Design: Storia
e Ricerche, Journal of the AIS/Design (Associazione ital-
iana degli storici del design).

John Fass is a designer of interfaces and interactions.
His work in design has included working for interna-
tional clients such as Arup, TED, Universal Music, et
Exxon. As a researcher, his work is focused on the place
for design in uncovering digital experiences. He also
works as a lecturer in the Information Experience
Design (IED) program at the Royal College of Art. Il
has a background as an architectural photographer
shooting for diverse clients worldwide. John has lived
and worked in London, Milan, Berlin, and Brussels.

Louis Fili is the cover designer for this issue of Design
Problèmes (vol. 32, Non. 1). She is director of Louise Fili Ltd, un
New York City graphic design firm specializing in food
packaging and restaurant identities. Her latest book is
Graphique de la Rue: The Signs of Paris.

Paul Hekkert is a full professor of Form Theory in
the Faculty of Industrial Design Engineering at
Delft University of Technology. He conducts research
on the ways products impact human experience and
behavior. He is co-editor of Product Experience (2008)
and co-author of Vision in Design: A Guidebook for
Innovators (2011).

Ali O. Ilhan is an assistant professor of Industrial
Design at Ozyegin University (OzU) in Istanbul.
He holds Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in industrial
design from Istanbul Technical University (ITU). Il
completed his PhD in sociology at Washington State
University (WSU) dans 2013. His research interests
include longitudinal and hierarchical data analysis,
social network analysis, science and technology
études, sociology of design, and critical studies of
interdisciplinarity.

Gideon Kossoff is an adjunct professor in the School
of Design at Carnegie Mellon University. His research
focuses on the relationships between humans and
the natural environment and humans and the built
or designed world as the foundation for a sustainable
society. He holds a PhD in design (Holism and the
Reconstitution of Everyday Life: A Framework for
Transition to a Sustainable Society) from the University
of Dundee, Écosse.

Teal Triggs is a professor of Graphic Design and
Associate Dean in the School of Communication,
Royal College of Art. As a graphic design historian,
critique, and educator she has lectured and broadcast
widely, and her writings appear in a number of edited
books and international design publications. Her previ-
ous books include: Fanzines and The Typographic Experi-
ment: Radical Innovations in Contemporary Type Design,
both published by Thames & Hudson. She is a Fellow
of the International Society of Typographic Designers,
the Royal College of Art and the Royal Society of Arts.

Barry Wylant is an associate professor in the Faculty
of Environmental Design at the University of Calgary.
His expertise includes industrial design, ID profession-
al practice, design thinking, design theory, sustainable
conception, and manufacturing technologies. He has pub-
lished articles related to design thinking and design
pedagogy. He and co-authors, Ezio Manzini and Stuart
Walker, published Enabling Solutions for Sustainable
Living: A Workshop (2008). He maintains an industrial
design consultancy in Calgary, completing projects in
various areas including medical devices, sporting
goods, GPS equipment, and consumer electronics.

Artemis Yagou was born in Athens and lives in
Munich, where she teaches for Macromedia
University for Media and Communication. Elle
is senior researcher for the ERC-CoG-2014 project
Luxury, Fashion and Social Status in Early Modern
South-Eastern Europe. Her research interests include
the uses of nationalism in design, design in relation
to technology, and the history of dress. Her book
Fragile Innovation: Episodes in Greek Design History
(CreateSpace, 2011/2015, English/Greek edition
respectivement), explores the modernization of Greece
from a design history perspective. She is a member
of the Editorial Board of The Design Journal, of the
International Advisory Board of ThRAD, A Design
Culture Journal, and the Book Review Editor of ICON,
the journal of the International Committee for the

Tom Lee is a writer, researcher and teacher who
works in the Design and Architecture Building at the
University of Technology Sydney. He has a PhD in
Comparative Literature, focusing on the innovative
syntax of W. G. Sebald, and has several years teaching
experience in design and literary history. Tom has pub-
lished several academic articles, is an award winning
poet, and regularly publishes essays on a wide variety
of topics. He is a 2014 recipient of the Marten Bequest
Travelling Scholarship for the category of prose.

Grace Lees-Maffei is Reader in Design History at the
University of Hertfordshire and Programme Director
for DHeritage, the Professional Doctorate in Heritage.
She is Managing Editor of the Journal of Design History
and an advisory board member for The Poster (Intellect)
and for AIS/Design: Storia e Ricerche, Journal of the AIS/
Design (Associazione italiana degli storici del design).
Grace is the author of Design at Home: Domestic Advice
Books in Britain and the USA since 1945 (2013); editor
of Writing Design: Words and Objects (2012) and Iconic
Designs: 50 Stories about 50 Things (2014); co-editor
with Kjetil Fallan of Made in Italy: Rethinking a Century
of Design (2013), and co-editor with Rebecca Houze of
The Design History Reader (2010).

Ezio Manzini has worked for the past two decades
in the field of design for sustainability. Recently, il
founded DESIS, an international network on design for
social innovation and sustainability. He is Honorary
Professor at the Politecnico di Milano, Chair Professor
at University of the Arts London and, currently, guest
Professor at Tongji University, Shanghai, and Jiangnan
University, Wuxi. His latest book is Design, When Every-
body Designs. An Introduction to Design for Social Innova-
tion (AVEC Presse, 2015).

Victor Margolin is Professor Emeritus of Design
History at the University of Illinois, Chicago. He is a
founding editor and now co-editor of Design Issues.
He is currently completing the third volume of
World History of Design, which will be published by
Bloomsbury in London. The first two volumes were
published in April 2015.

Trine Brun Petersen is an assistant professor at
University of Southern Denmark. She holds a PhD
on the subject of design and behavior from Design
School Kolding and has done research in design on
institutional contexts such as prisons, hospitals and
museums. Her recent research interests include
uniforms, work wear, and fashion for children.

Vibeke Riisberg is an associate professor at Design
School Kolding and holds a PhD in design of printed
textiles and the evolution from analogue to digital pro-
cesses. She has done research in institutional contexts
such as office environments and hospitals. Recent re-
search interests include handling of textiles in service
systèmes, design and aesthetic experience.
