Sebnem Timur Ogut graduated from the Department
of Industrial Design at METU and received her
degrees of MFA and PhD from Bilkent University,
Department of Graphic Design. She currently teaches
at Istanbul Technical University, Department of
Industrial Product Design. Her research interests con-
centrate mainly on design and particularly on objects
as cultural phenomena at the intersection point of
semiotics, material culture, and visual culture studies.
Anna Plazowska is an assistant in the Cultural
Studies Institute at the Jesuit University in Kracow
(Poland). She holds an MA in art history from the
Jagiellonian University (Kracow/Poland) and an
MA in European studies from the College of Europe
(Bruge/Belgium), and is a PhD candidate at the Art
History Institute at the Jagiellonian University. Ella es
a recipient of the Solomon Guggenheim Fellowship.
Her research is focused on the contemporary art and
theory of design in the sixties.
Marc Steen is a senior research scientist at TNO,
an independent research and innovation organization
in the Netherlands. He earned MSc, PDEng, and PhD
degrees in Industrial Design Engineering at Delft
University of Technology. His expertise is in human-
centered design, open innovation and applied ethics,
and he is interested in helping organizations to use
technology to promote people’s well-being.
Arden Stern is a design historian whose scholarship
focuses on graphic design and visual culture.
Her research explores vernacular graphic design
practices across multiple platforms, from hand-
painted signage to ransom notes. She is an assistant
professor of Humanities & Sciences at ArtCenter
College of Design.
Damla Tonuk studied Industrial Design at METU,
Pavo, and expanded on her interest in the make-up
of the physical world with her PhD research in the
Sociology Department at Lancaster University, Reino Unido.
Her research interests lie within the disciplinary
boundaries of design, material culture studies, y
STS. She is currently a lecturer of design, teaching
practical design skills, as well as pursuing her
scholarly interests.
Colaboradores
Per Liljenberg Halstrøm is a PhD Candidate at The
Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, School of Design
(KADK) and The Copenhagen School of Design and
Tecnología (KEA). Having a background in Rhetoric
and Fiction Writing, his research is primarily con-
cerned with how designers and design education
programs may benefit from both ancient and modern
theory on storytelling and rhetoric.
Derek A. Ham is an assistant professor of Graphic
Design at North Carolina State University’s College
of Design. He holds a PhD in Design & Cálculo
from MIT and a MArch from Harvard’s Graduate
School of Design. Derek’s research spans the areas
of game based learning, algorithmic thinking, y
design education.
Heather McKinnon is a PhD candidate in the Urban
Informatics Research Lab at the Queensland Universi-
ty of Technology, Australia. Her research interests
cover environmental sustainability in everyday urban
entornos, focusing on modern mundanity. Su
work is conducted through a speculative lens and
investigates the design implications of everyday
resource use.
Catherine Moriarty is professor of Art and Design
History at the University of Brighton and curatorial
director of the University of Brighton Design
Archives. She has directed a variety of research,
exhibition and publication projects that explore the
archive as a site of inquiry, including the Arts and
Humanities Research Council-funded Exploring British
Design in 2014/15, and collaborative doctoral projects
with the Chartered Society of Designers and the
Design Museum. She has written on the history of
the photographic library of the Council of Industrial
Diseño, on the relationship between sculpture and
diseño, and she was appointed co-editor of the
Sculpture Journal in 2014.
Karen Myers designed this cover of Design Issues,
volumen. 32, No. 4 (Otoño 2016). A Cleveland-based art
director, graphic designer, and illustrator, she is the
owner and art director at Karen Myers Design. Su
work has been honored with numerous awards by the
following organizations: the ADDY’s, Art Direction
Magazine, American Corporate Identity, Curious and
Potlatch Papers, American Advertising Federation,
Graphic Design USA, and both the regional and
national AIGA. Her piece “The Grand Old Game”
earned a spot in AIGA’s national “The Cover Show”
permanent collection.
