María José Araya is an architect and an active mem-
ber of the Exploraciones Urbanas (Urban Explorations)
collective since 2014. Her diploma project became
ongoing research on playscapes (ephemeral land-
scapes of urban play) in Santiago, with particular
emphasis on cyclist emancipation.

Boris Bandyopadhyay studied design at the Köln
International School of Design (KISD) and cultural
studies at the Humboldt University of Berlin. Como un
design researcher, he worked at Bern University
of the Arts HKB where he was involved in the field
of social communication research. Boris is also a
professional product- and communication designer
and develops interior design, furniture, and its
process of customization. His research focuses
on the changing relation between the user and the
artifact. His work has been nominated for several
design prizes, among them the German Federal
ECODESIGN Award.

Stephen J. Beckett is an assistant professor in the
School of Visual Communication Design, Hongik
Universidad, in Seoul, South Korea. His research
interests center on the convergence of design
theory and critical theory, especially dialectical
materialism, Lacanian psychoanalysis, y

Ryan Hageman is a graphic designer and the founder
of Gurafiku, a website on the history of Japanese
graphic design. He has worked as a graphic designer
for museums and cultural institutions, including the
Art Institute of Chicago, the Walker Art Center,
MCAD DesignWorks, and the MVA Studio. Él
received his MA in arts administration and non-profit
management from the School of the Art Institute
of Chicago and a BFA in graphic design from the
Minneapolis College of Art and Design.

Ali O. Ilhan is an assistant professor of Industrial
Design/Design, Technology and Society (DTS) en
Ozyegin University (OzU) in Istanbul. He holds
Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in industrial design
from Istanbul Technical University (ITU). He also
serves as the co-director of graduate studies for DTS
MSc and PhD programs at OzU. Ali completed his
PhD in sociology at Washington State University
(WSU) en 2013. His research interests include
longitudinal/hierarchical data analysis, social
network analysis, science and technology studies,
sociology of education, sociology of design, y
critical studies of interdisciplinarity.

Barbara Jaffee is associate professor of Art History
in the School of Art and Design at Northern Illinois
Universidad, DeKalb. Her work on American modern-
ism and design has appeared in a number of journals,
anthologies, and exhibition catalogues.

Peter Jones studied art and design history at Middle-
sex University and Winchester School of Art. He is a
senior lecturer in the School of Media Arts and Tech-
nology at Southampton Solent University. He has
written widely on post-war art, design and graphics,
and recently contributed to The Routledge Dictionary
of Modernism.

Harald Klingemann studied at Cologne University
where he received the degree of Doctor of Economics
y Ciencias Sociales. He has taught at the University
of Bonn, and has been research director at the Swiss
Institute for the Prevention of Alcohol and Drug
Problems. Actualmente, he is research professor at the
Bern University of the Arts HKB–Research Unit
Communication Design. Harald’s main research
interests include the natural history of addiction
careers use for which he received the honorary doctor
of the University of Stockholm in 2003, temporal
aspects of public art and public space and the cross-

Kristian Kloeckl is associate professor at North-
eastern University in the Department of Art + Diseño
and the School of Architecture. Prior to this he was
the Real Time City Group lead at the MIT Senseable
City Lab and on the faculty of Università Iuav
di Venezia. His work focuses on interaction and
information design in the context of today’s hybrid
cities in which information is—in significant ways—
material and matter informational. He has published
extensively on this topic and his work has been
exhibited at venues such as MoMA, Vienna MAK,
Venice Architecture Biennale,
Singapore Art Museum.

Janette Matthews is a lecturer in Textiles at Lough-
borough University, Reino Unido. Her cross-disciplinary PhD
and research interests have a focus on combining
digital (p.ej., laser processing) and craft practices
(p.ej., pleating, weaving, dyeing) to develop design-
led three-dimensional textile processes and artifacts.
Janette has studied both mathematics and textile
design and has a research focus on enabling the
practice of mathematics in art and textiles. Ella es
a co-founding editor of the Journal of Textile Design
Research and Practice (Routledge, taylor & Francisco).

Nithikul Nimkulrat intertwines research with textile
práctica, focusing on experiential knowledge in craft
processes in the context of design research. Nithikul
has worked at Aalto University, Finland (2004–10) y
Loughborough University, Reino Unido (2011–13),
and is currently professor and head of the Department
of Textile Design at Estonian Academy of Arts, Estonia
(2013–present). Nithikul is an editor of a recently
released book titled Crafting Textiles in the Digital Age
(Bloomsbury, 2016).

Daniel Opazo is an architect and researcher based
in Santiago. His research focuses on the relationships
between architecture, the city, and the political,
with emphasis on the production of public spaces,
design participation, and political imagination. Él
is currently an assistant professor in the Department
of Architecture at the University of Chile.

Arne Scheuermann is professor for theory of design
at the Bern University of the Arts and head of the
Research Unit Communication Design. His research
interests embrace the theory, practise and history
of visual rhetoric in the areas of art, film and design,
and the impact of communication design in today’s
sociedad. His recent research explores the implications
of visual rhetoric in areas of health care and counter
terrorism.

Jimmy Schmid graduated as a graphic designer from
the School of Design in Luzern and studied at the
Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs in
París. As an experienced communication designer
he was in charge of complex projects at the interface
between two- and three-dimensional design, y
he received several international awards. Desde 2011
Jimmy has been professor for visual communication
at the Bern University of the Arts HKB; and since
2008, he has directed the further training program
“Signaletics—Environmental Communication
Design.” Jimmy teaches as a guest professor at several
national and international universities. His research
is currently focused on “spatial orientation and

Clemens Thornquist is a professor in Fashion Design
at The Swedish School of Textiles, University of Borås,
Suecia. His research focuses on foundational issues
in art, diseño, philosophy, and organization.

Teal Triggs is a professor of Graphic Design and
Associate Dean at the Royal College of Art, Londres.
Her books include Fanzines (Thames & Hudson,
2010), the children’s book The School of Art (Wide
Eyed Editions, 2015), and more recently with Leslie
Atzmon, she has co-edited The Graphic Design
Reader (Bloomsbury, 2018). Teal is Associate Editor
for Reviews, Design Issues.

Matías Wolff is an anthropologist. He holds a
Master’s degree from the Ecole des Hautes Etudes
en Sciences Sociales de Paris (EHESS), where he is
also pursuing a PhD with a historical anthropology
research project on the birth and development of
New Age thought in Chile between 1960 y 2000.

Huang Yingjie is the cover designer for this issue of
Design Issues Volume 33, No. 4 (Otoño 2017). Él es
